Darkroom member Matilde Damele has been selected to exhibit one of the images from her Exiles series at Artrooms London 2019.

This is what drove Matilde to make this work:

“My project Exiles expresses the existential feeling of not belonging to the life we are living. In 2014, I was denied a re-entry to New York where I had lived to the previous fifteen years. My personal immigration issue mirrors the lives of thousands of people who look for a home in a foreign country and fear losing their right to stay. I want to express the sense of anguish and emptiness that emerges when we feel estranged from our surroundings and we view our life as an exile, rather than a comforting place.

I chose to screen print my b&w images on plastic bin bags instead of making darkroom prints because I want to emphasise the idea of lives being treated as disposable as well as being fragile.”

See the work at Meliá White House, Albany Street, London, NW1 3UP on November 23rd - 24th.
